We have probably all been in a place where we have seen someone take over from a business that we dealt with and suddenly the business seems to go downhill.
We hear about the new boss doing something that the old one would never have countenanced and before long their reputation and their business is in tatters.
In these hard financial times with businesses closing down every day, it is vital to realize the importance of having a solid reputation.
If you have a business which requires payments up front, you can survive only if you have a reputation of providing timely and consistent delivery.
There are many examples of companies that did not make the effort to maintain their hard earned reputation and had to pay dearly in terms of loss of customers and poor sales.
Trust is so important
Although trust has always been important, it is absolutely vital now; more than ever before.
Trust is something that cannot be developed overnight.
It is only after you have kept your commitment time and time again and never failed on your promise that your customers begin to have faith in you.
They know that you will deliver, come what may. You had taken an order and by the time you purchased raw material, the prices escalated.
Now if you go back on your word and ask for a higher price for the same order, although the customer will pay he will eventually lose trust in you and will think twice before placing an order with you in the future. This small example is sufficient to illustrate the importance of trust.
Build relationships
You know that you are earning a profit from the customer and he too realizes it, but if you are willing to do a bit more than merely delivering on time and maintaining the quality, he will appreciate it.
Little things go a long way in winning the customer over.
Actions speak louder than words
Never do something to breach the trust of the customer.
If you have had a conversation with the customer in which you have talked about something but do exactly the opposite or anything apart from what you have committed to it will be taken as a breach of trust.
Even though you may not have given your word in writing, you can be pretty certain that it has the effect of damaging the reputation of your business.
Treat every customers with respect
Never take your customers for granted and pay respect to all, no matter whether they are small or big.
Returning calls to the customers that came in your absence convey the message that you consider them important and are serious about your business.
Importance of after sales service
Probably much more important than selling a product is providing a good after sale service.
It is when your customer is in distress that your reputation is more at stake than when he is happy with the performance of your product.
A prompt and efficient after sale service is helpful for building a solid reputation for any business.
Word of mouth is important in this regard as you can be sure that a satisfied customer will bring in many more customers if you provide a prompt service and listen to his problems with concern.
Quality of product and service
It is the quality of your product or service that speaks on your behalf.
If you maintain a high standard of quality at all times, you can be certain that you will retain your customer base which will be loyal to your company.
Happy customers not only translate into more business. They will also build a solid reputation for you.
Keeping the image untarnished
There are lots of factors apart from the product or service that affect the reputation of a company.
Even rumors can damage the reputation of any company.
If you feel that people are trying to smear the image of the company, you must take guard and come out in defense as the reputation of the company is at stake.
Fight with all your might along with any proof to prove your critics wrong.
By doing this you will send a strong message to your customers and suppliers that you are prepared to fight for the right cause.
