Children learn best when they are having fun and Leapster capitalize on this fact.
Parents love educational games so it is no surprise that the Leapster Explorer has made it to the hot sellers list for 2010.
Does it deserve its place?
The Leapster Explorer looks like a games console but it is so much more.
It is designed for those aged between 4 and 9 but as it will recognize what educational level your son or daughter is currently at, it should work for a slightly wider age range.
In addition to the 40 plus games and activities contained in the unit you also have access to the Leapworld internet site.
Here you can download more games and activities some free but most have to be purchased so that is an additional cost.
Parents can keep an eye on their child's educational progress via this same internet site by viewing what games they have played and the levels they have achieved.
You don't need to be worried about your child being on the internet as the site is secure and child friendly.
What type of learning is supported?
The answer to that is just about everything. In addition to English, Math and Science it also teaches other important skills such as music and problem solving.
One huge benefit of the Leapster explorer is the fact it forces a child to use a pencil (or something shaped like a pencil) to complete some of the games.
Quite a few kids, particularly boys, struggle with holding pens and pencils and since schools have yet to allow kids to complete homework using keyboards, this is a key skill to learn.
Children learn best when they are having fun and Leapster capitalize on this fact.
For instance, in one game designed to teach kids how to form letters and write words, their reward is food for their virtual pet when they complete a sequence.
Each child can have an account on the Explorer so you don't need to worry about arguments over who got to which level.
You will have problems if they have to share the one console as it is so much fun they will want to play it forever.
There are numerous games based on children's favorite films including Toy Story 3, Disney Tinkerbell, and Dora the Explorer etc available.
Kids love playing out their favorite films and don't seem to realize that they are studying at the same time.
Any there any downsides to this educational product?
The biggest gripe most people will have is the fact that the Leapster games are not compatible with the Leapster explorer.
You must buy new games specifically made for the explorer such as the Toy Story 3 Leapster explorer game.
Don't forget to buy batteries and it is probably best to purchase rechargeable ones.
It also takes about an hour for the system to be set up when you first get it so you might want to have this done before Santa produces it as a gift!
