In late January 2011, sales of digital books (eBooks) began outselling print versions on Amazon.com for the first time in history.
And with that announcement, all doubts and questions about the long-term viability of eReader devices – like the Kindle – quickly evaporated.
The market has spoken loud and clear; readers love digitally published books, magazines and newspapers.
And because of this, sales of Amazon's Kindle devices have skyrocketed. But what exactly is a Kindle?
Although the kindle is not a new product, there are still people who are not sure of exactly what a kindle reader is, so here is a basic introduction.
Simply put, a Kindle is Amazon.com's version of a generic eReader.
An eReader is a device that allows people to read digitally published material.
And the most common type of digital publication is an eBook (electronic book).
These books (magazines and newspapers too) are found at Amazon's eBook store (the Kindle Store) and can be downloaded from there directly to the device.
Amazon introduced the first of their eReaders in 2007, and since that time they've updated the technology four times.
In addition, they've added several different versions of the Kindle which offer readers a wide range of features and prices.
The devices come with wi-fi connectivity, and the top end Kindles also have 3-G wireless.
The basic Kindle device is thin and lightweight, and is extremely easy and convenient to carry.
It weighs just 6 ounces – less than a paperback book – with a screen size of 6” diagonally.
And even though it's a portable electronic device, the battery charge lasts up to one month; that's a lot of reading.
The Kindle holds at least 1400 books – and since they're stored in the cloud – you can't lose them – even if you lose your device and have to replace it with a new one.
The actual process of reading on a Kindle has also advanced since its initial version.
Kindles now use the latest version of Pearl imaging technology, called e-ink.
It is the closet thing there is to a printed page without actually being one.
And since these devices are not backlit (like computers) they can be read in bright light situations with absolutely no glare – just like a book.
And that's really the whole point of eReaders; they strive to be as close to the book reading experience as possible.
You can even highlight text and make notes in the margins – just like with a physical book.
And except for its most basic version, the Kindle also offers a “text to speech” feature so that readers can actually listen to their purchases as audio-books.
Kindle has changed and expanded the world of reading and publishing forever.
And the reading public now benefits from increased portability and access to material to a degree only dreamt of before. With Kindle, the future has arrived.
