Flying with children is something that fills many parents with dread. As a child, flying is fairly boring once you get past the initial thrill, as is having to sit in your seat for hours on end.
However, by preparing in advance for your flight, you can have a number of top toys ready to go to ensure your child remains thoroughly distracted and entertained throughout. Some are more obvious than others, but all have their merits!
A Goody Bag
Make your own goody bag of small, simple toys. Allow your child to pick one item from the goody bag every 15 minutes. This could be a figurine, some stickers and a sticker book, or something constructive.
Constructive toys can be excellent for flights as they focus the child on completing the task at hand – that might be building a small LEGO figure.
The anticipation of the next surprise will be enough to keep the child calm, as they know they must behave in order to receive the next goody bag surprise.
Tablet/Laptop
If you have a tablet or laptop that you can bring on the flight, then you’re already half way there. Downloading some simple games to your device can keep children entertained for hours on end.
If your child isn’t a big fan of games, why not download a favourite movie or series of programs from a favourite TV show?
It may sound obvious, but having some digital media ready to go can be the difference between catching a couple of hours sleep and staying awake the entire time!
Just try to remember to bring a pair of child friendly headphones so as not to distract other passengers.
Colouring/Activity Books
Again, a simple idea, but one that is often overlooked. Using colouring or activity books that have some sort of link with your destination can be a fantastic way of focusing your child’s excitement of getting to wherever it is you are going!
It’s important to have a bit of variety, however, as colouring in the same type of picture more than once can quickly become tedious in the child’s eye.
Destination Jigsaws
Standard jigsaws work just as well, but you could also take a photo of where you are going and cut it up to make a homemade jigsaw.
This can be done with numerous photos and for every one the child completes he or she finds out something extra about what they will be doing when they reach their destination.
This process of drip feeding information will encourage the child to stay focused, and will lead to a much calmer flight!
