Depression is often shown in cartoons as a heavy cloud, with rain and strikes of lightening. The person who is depressed has no umbrella to keep them safe and dry from the storm while others around them walk in brilliant sunlight.
Many people question whether depression is a chemical imbalance or a state of mind.
In most cases, people should seek a doctor’s advice and if possible have tests to determine if there is a physical issue that needs to be dealt with.
The majority of depression cases, are likely from states that people put themselves in.
Allowing a stressful situation to get out of control, can eventually lead to dark depression.
There are a number of things people can do, to relieve the depressed state that they are in.
First and foremost is the art of breathing properly. When a person is depressed, they tend to slouch the shoulders and collapse the chest wall, which inhibits proper breathing.
One can stand with the legs about a foot apart and hold the shoulders square while pretending to stretch the whole body skyward as if the head can touch the clouds.
Begin to inhale deeply on a count of four and hold for two…then exhale slowly to a count of six.
This brings fresh oxygen into the lungs and also helps to clean the toxins from the lymph nodes.
Deep breathing moves the blood along and helps to expel toxins that build up.
Next to breathing, a good bout of exercise will also help to reduce the state of depression. It is not necessary to become a marathon runner.
Actually quite the opposite. I like to call this, run and trot.
You begin by jogging briskly for 2 to 4 minutes, then slow it down to a speed walk for 1 to 3 minutes and then switch back to the jog for 2 to 4.
This is excellent cardiovascular exercise and moving your heart rate up and down rather than a steady pounding is much more beneficial.
You can incorporate a skipping style, swinging the arms up and down as you move.
Let’s pretend it’s a rainy day and you need to exercise in the basement.
Well doing Hindu squats will work your body and build your cardio at the same time.
You need no extra room to do this exercise. Start by placing your feet, about 8-10 inches apart.
Put your arms out straight in front of you. As you start to squat down, you need to do two things.
You begin to move your arms as if you are rowing a boat and while your arms in that motion and you have started to squat, raise your heels.
It’s an overall piston like movement and your breathe should be deep on the way down and exhale on the way up.
Exercise is not the only way to deal with depression.
Keeping a daily notebook of what is going on in your life and deciding why you are feeling depressed at a certain time is very helpful.
Once you can pinpoint the exact source of your depression, you can then move on to changing how you feel about what is depressing you.
Sit in a comfortable chair and close your eyes. Think and try to picture the situation that is making you depressed.
Let’s say for example that you believe you are depressed because a co-worker is constantly demeaning you in staff meetings.
Always taking your ideas and putting them down while trying to make themselves look like the only person in the office who is capable.
Get a good picture of that person in your mind, see how they are dressed for the day, how their hair is combed?
What do they smell like, are they wearing a scent?
Hear their voice as they begin to twist something you just contributed to the meeting.
Quickly, see them grow donkey ears, shooting up out of their head and they suddenly open their mouths wide and begin to bray like a donkey desperate for attention.
As they like to say in sales, “rinse and repeat.” Do this over and over again, til the thought of being near that person, now makes you break out in a big smile.
Like I said, there are many methods of dealing with depression. You need to find which one works for you and don’t give up…keep swinging til you hit that home run.
