The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest is book three in the trilogy written by Swedish author Stieg Larsson. By the title alone, the work suggests that the pages in between the covers deliver a story that stings both the heart and mind of the reader.
The suggestion is correct. Again, fans are drawn into the sometimes murky and evil environment in which Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist exist.
This novel in the trilogy doesn’t merely arrive on the scene with a continuation of the familiar story, but rather charges full speed ahead to grab readers by the throat and demands attention.
As this novel first begins, readers will find Lisbeth laid up in the hospital after the unsuccessful attempt to silence her. Though she was victimized, Lisbeth’s character is defined by who she has become in allowing her past to shape her.
Pitted against the evil that’s haunted her, Lisbeth tries to figure out a way to help Mikael take down those who once tried to destroy her.
Despite her feelings for Mikael, Lisbeth has not choice but to trust his guidance if she wants to live.
Having survived the attempt on her life in The Girl Who Played with Fire, in The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, Lisbeth is back and recovering from her battle scars.
Those behind the scenes pulling at Lisbeth’s life strings need her put away, need her credibility torn down so they try to have her locked away in an institution for the insane.
With the odds stacked against both her and Mikael, giving up would be easy for characters with lesser backbone. The pacing and timely release of suspenseful information throughout the novel is a testament to the skill and writing talent of Stieg Larsson.
As the reader draws closer to the final chapters in the novel, time will cease to matter and the only desire will be to get to the answers the author wonderfully doles out.
Justice for Lisbeth finally prevails and readers are left cheering for a character that showed how the evil that befell her could not keep her down. She proved to all what she was made of.
In this finale, the darkness that shrouded the characters in the previous two book installments finally reaches its satisfying crescendo.
The ending of The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest will be a goodbye to fans that loved the characters from the very beginning.
