As it heats up here in Australia this summer, I'm reminded to go get my chapstick and protect my lips from becoming chapped.
When the weather suddenly changes and gets a little windy, your lips could be the first part of your body to suffer.
You need to keep your face protected with a sunhat and stay hydrated to help your skin cope with the heat.
But the most common problem is that as we dehydrate on hot days is that we tend to lick our lips as they begin to dry. And that saliva only makes the problem worse, so that by the end of the day, your lips have at least one painful split!
One easy and quick solution is to whip out your trusty lip balm. A quick sweep across the lips and relief arrives in no time at all.
What is a Lip Balm?
The purpose of a lip balm is to provide relief to dry and chapped lips.
The skin on the lips is very thin and because they do not contain any natural oil glands to keep them moist, they are very susceptible to the adverse effects of cold wind and dry temperatures.
A layer of lip balm locks in moisture and provides a temporary barrier against the elements.
What is Lip Balm Made From?
Lip balms are essential a wax like substance. There are several ingredients that are found in the majority of these types of products.
The common ingredients include beeswax, paraffin, lanolin, flavourings, perfumes, scented oils, certain vitamins and minerals, sunscreen and colourants. The different brands will use a combination based on these.
How Does it Come?
You can buy lip balms or lip salves in easy to use tubes, where you take off the lid and turn the nozzle, similar to a lipstick tube.
Then you just glide the lip balm over the lips for the required coverage.
The other option is where you can buy balms in small jars or containers made from plastic or metal.
With this type, you apply the balm by using the tip of your finger.
How Do You Use It?
Most people will buy a lip balm when they realise that their lips are drying out on a regular basis. You apply it as and when you need to.
It is easy to use and it is convenient to carry with you where ever you are going.
Some people apply a layer of lip balm under or over their lipstick for extra moisture.
The Disadvantages of Using a Lip Balm
Some people believe that once you start using lip balms you can become addicted to them.
Instead of allowing your lips to stay bare and acclimatise to the weather, constantly smothering the lips in a layer of waxy substance could be seen as detrimental to the natural process.
The Popular Lip Balm Brands
The most popular lip balm is definitely ChapStick.
Many people use this name when they are talking about lip balms in general, similar to how Hoover is used when people talk about all vacuum cleaners.
Other well known brands include Vaseline, Carmex, Blistex, Lypsyl and Nivea.
If you are unsure which product to choose, the best way to decide is to test a selection.
These are inexpensive items so you can try out a few. You will then be able work out which works best for you.
Some people like the flavoured lip balms while others can not stand the taste.
Some people prefer the convenience of a tube dispenser, while others like the aesthetics of the small jars and containers.
