Well, my fine hair was never a problem for the first 40+ years of my life because I had a LOT of the fine hair.
Being naturally ash blonde, I had not needed to stress my hair with colour treatments or any of the nasty dyes and stuff so many women have to use.
But in 2000-2001 I developed thyroid problems and along with brittle flaky nails, and super sensitive skin issues, I also experienced hair loss!!
Great... so along with looking like a beached whale through no fault of my diet or eating habits, I now also lost my nice long nails and nice thick hair. Very demoralizing.
It took a very, very long time before my doctor finally agreed that maybe something was wrong, and I finally had blood tests to show the thyroid problem... all the while my hair kept getting thinner.
After starting the prescribed medication I also looked into specialised thyroid diets, and cut back on the mega soy products I had been taking as a vegetarian, as that is suggested as a trigger.
I learned so much about hair health, and wrote a book about the natural ways you can improve your hair health...
7 Ways in 7 Days to Beautiful, Healthy Hair which is a really helpful resource, but the wretched thyroid problems meant I needed a bit more help than that.
Anyway, a decade and a half later, my hair and nails were still struggling to recover their old strength and length, despite my research into improving them both naturally.
So since the thyroid issues seem to still have lingering effects, I finally decided to buy a HairMax laser comb 7 when I saw it on TV for $300 - turns out you can get it online at amazon for about $199... but oh well.
I've started using it without changing my hair products. This is because I've tried the natural and herbal products with cayenne peppers and other spices, to stimulate your scalp, and frankly they didn't do much for my hair thickness or volume.
So, its only been 2-3 weeks and I've been using the lazer comb for 10-15 minutes... and I've missed some of the Mon-Wed-Friday days I meant to do it... but, I still noticed yesterday that my hair is sitting higher than before, not as flat.
And when I part my hair, there are definitely more short hairs growing than usual. Obviously we always have some short hairs growing, naturally replacing the hair we lose, but it definitely appears to have more there than before.
My scalp was a bit itchy the first few times I used it, which worried me a bit, but I thought I might as well persevere for a few weeks to see if it would go away on its own, and it seems to.
