So, you’ve made the decision to create a budget the whole family can benefit from?
This is a great idea and one that every family should consider, but keep in mind that if you want your budget to be a success, you have to have a plan first.
Below are some strategies that will help your family budget be a success.
· Get the whole family in on it!
If you truly want your family budget to work for the family, you really have to include everyone in the household (who is old enough to understand what it’s all about).
Keep in mind that when you start a budget, it affects everyone, which is why you need the whole family in on it.
· Leave room for fun.
Although your family budget is going to be a little tighter in the spending department, you still need to have some money allotted for fun things.
Every family has a different idea of what “fun things” are, which is completely fine. You have to decide on the “fun things” as a family.
For instance, it may be that you all decide to save up for a year to go on a white water rafting vacation or maybe your “fun thing” is going to see a movie or out to dinner once a month.
Whatever it is, you should all be in agreement about it and it should be something that is reachable (with a little work) so that everyone in the family continues to stay motivated and work for it!
· Be realistic about your income.
The worst thing you can do is guess at how much money your family brings in a month. You need to have as close of an estimate as possible.
In order to do this (if your paychecks vary), take all of your pay stubs from the past three months and total them up and then divide by three to get the average amount of money you get each month.
If you are doubtful that every month will be as high as your average, round down.
It’s better to have a tight budget with a little money left over from your check then one that is based on a higher figure than you can bring home each month.
· Give it some time.
You are not going to see results instantly from your budget.
All budgets need time to work. In fact, it may take three or four months before your family gets the budget thing down and the results start to show.
· Consider using budget software.
If you enjoy keeping track of your finances electronically, then consider purchasing a budgeting software package for the home computer.
You may find that this is the easiest way to keep up with the family budget.
· Work to become debt-free.
Debt is one of the things that really bogs people down.
When you are in debt whether it’s a car payment, mortgage, credit cards or some other debt, your money isn’t truly yours.
Therefore, one of your family’s top goals should be to become debt free.
· Get on the same page about the necessities.
Everyone’s version of a necessity is different and when you create a family budget with everyone in the household, you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about!
It’s very important that everyone in the family is on the same page about what “the necessities” are.
For instance, food, clothing, gas, shelter and utilities are necessities.
Things like makeup, jewelry, cable, video games, internet, etc. are not.
If you can get this worked out early on in the budgeting process, your family budget will be on the way to success.
· Combine things to save money.
One of the things a budget does is it makes you think about how much money various activities are costing you.
If you want to cut back on your spending, then one way to do it is to combine your errands so you aren’t driving in to town several times a week to complete them all. Instead try to do them all in one day.
Another thing you can do is plan a family vacation somewhere close to the long-distant relatives you go visit once a year…this will cut two trips down to one and save a lot of money!
