Square Foot Gardening This Year

I was not sure if I was going to have a garden this year. I did some reading online and discovered Square Foot Gardening.

I was very inspired by it and decided that it was what I wanted to do.



I had my helper make me a couple of boxes. We did two 4 feet by 4 feet boxes. He made a grid out of rope for me so that each box had 16 squares. Each square is one square foot.



After that I went about getting my soil ready. I made a big batch of it. I used 1/3rd compost.


I found a few different sources for that. One was mushroom, one cow and one chicken. I then used 1/3rd Peat Moss and 1/3rd Vermiculite. Using all of this is the best way to be able to grow plants.



I mixed it altogether and put it in my beds. I thought it looked great after I did that.

I then figured out what I wanted to plant. Since I had 32 squares to work with I was able to plant quite a few different things.



I decided to go with tomatoes, peppers, carrots, peas, strawberries, lettuce, radishes, sunflowers and broccoli. I bought all of the seeds and planted some inside and others outside.

I made sure to figure out when the best time to plant them was based on what type of vegetable or flower it was.



I started this two months ago and I am very happy with the results. We have already been able to eat some of our harvest.

The lettuce has been ready for a while now and we just pick it as we want to eat it. The peas are almost done and the tomatoes just need to turn red.



I am very happy I decided to start square foot gardening this year. It has been pretty easy for me to grow things. I never thought I would have this much growth in my garden.



I am already planning what I want to plant in the summer for the fall. I am doing my research so I get it right. I do wish I had started some seeds earlier than I did in the spring.



I hope to have a good fall harvest as well. It doesn't get too cold here until June so I am hoping that is enough time. It will be great to be able to grow things until then.



I told my friend about the way I have been gardening and she decided to do it too. She is having a lot of success as well. It is great to be able to talk to her about it.



I don't think I will ever go back to row gardening. I just love the square foot gardening and it really works. I can grow amazing plants right in my own backyard.
