PCBs and Body Fat

In recent studies a relationship between the environmental toxin PCB and body fat has been found. PCB stands for polychlorinated biphenyls. They are chemicals that are manufactured rather than occurring naturally in the environment.

And PCBs are easily absorbed by humans. You might come into contact with them through your food, drinking water, your workplace, and even in the air. These contaminants have many negative health consequences for children and adults.

But when it comes specifically to body fat, PCBs can cause problems with your endocrine system. Your endocrine system is the system in your body responsible for hormones and metabolism.

In particular, PCBs can cause your thyroid to malfunction. When that happens you can have your metabolism become sluggish and gain weight even though your lifestyle suggests that you should have a weight closer to your ideal.

If you’re concerned that your PCB levels may be too high, there’s a simple blood test that can help you to determine if they are high. Talk with your healthcare provider about your concerns and ask for the lab tests to confirm it.

In order to limit your exposure to PCBs, you’ll want to pay attention to your foods – especially when it comes to fish. You’ll want to limit the amount of fish you eat from waters that are contaminated by PCB. Check your local health department to find out what the PCB levels are in your area.

If you work in an environment with electrical equipment, make sure that all equipment is properly maintained and that the area has plenty of ventilation. And if you live near a manufacturing facility with high PCB levels in the soil, make sure to use caution when gardening or working with the soil.

The type of body fat that increases from PCB exposure is visceral body fat. That’s the fat that actually develops around your organs. It’s the most dangerous type of body fat that can lead to heart disease and an increased risk of diabetes.

It’s important to limit your exposure to this dangerous toxin so that you won’t suffer the health consequences that come from it. It’s always a good idea to research your local area and find out whether or not PCB levels are significant where you live and what places you should avoid.

The relationship with PCBs and body fat is only beginning to be understood and while more research is needed, we know enough to know that it’s important to avoid them.
