Let’s be honest: work is busy, hard, and on occasion, can feel as though it is taking over our entire lives.
If you are starting to feel your work/life balance tip in the wrong direction, read on for everything you need to know to restore harmony in all areas of your daily life.
Why Does A Good Work/Life Balance Matter?
Even if you love your job, there will inevitably be times when you want to take a step back and do something for yourself - and this is important for your mental health and well-being.
Failing to build a good work/life balance leads to an increase in stress, anxiety, and depression and could even have a negative impact on your mental health.
Building a good work/life balance is important, but learning how to maintain these boundaries is crucial to long-term health and well-being. A few top options to keep that all-important balance include:
Set Specific Goals and Priorities
This can be easier said than done, but setting clear, achievable goals is perfect for helping you to manage your workload more effectively and allows you to implement specific time management strategies to keep you on course.
Start by paying closer attention to the times at work when you feel most productive - is it in the morning or the evening?
After lunch or first thing? When you find your “productive period,” block this time off in your calendar for doing your most important activities.
Then, allocate less important tasks such as email answering or updating spreadsheets to times when you tend to “slump.”
Not only will this optimize your working time to be most productive, it also increases the chances you will get a good chunk of work done, reducing the odds of it spilling over into your out-of-work time.
Love Your Job
You may think, “if only it were that easy,” but this should be your priority. If you really hate what you do, then this attitude will bleed into every aspect of your life, leaving you in a low mood.
If you have a reason to get out of bed daily, you will find it easier to leave your work at the door.
Put Your Health First
This is one element that really cannot be overestimated. You must prioritize your physical, mental, and emotional health above everything else.
If this means taking a day off when you are sick, leaving early to attend a workout class, or taking a personal day to deal with mental health, then so be it.
Putting your health first ensures you give your body, mind, and spirit the best chance to recover.
Set Boundaries
This one can be controversial, but it is important to help you avoid burnout and retain a good work/life balance. When you are out of the office, be out of the office.
Ideally, have a separate email, phone, and laptop for work and home.
You also need to be firm about your work hours. If you are on vacation, clarify that you will not be answering work queries, and inform your manager that you will not take work calls in personal time.
This may seem intimidating, but it will ensure that you are ready to do your best at work.
Maintaining a work/life balance can be challenging, but by making just a few changes, you can enjoy a whole new way of enjoying both work and personal life.
