Following the death of a spouse and getting a divorce, the majority of the population unanimously named moving to another home as the third most stressful thing you can do in life. It is easy to see why.
Packing your entire life into boxes is never easy, and the stress and anxiety can push relationships to breaking point.
Fortunately for you, we have put together a few simple, handy tips to help alleviate the pressure and ensure that your move runs smoothly and efficiently.
Give Yourself Time
One of the biggest mistakes many homeowners make when moving is to not give themselves enough time.
A good rule of thumb is that you will always need more time than you think.
In most cases, you will have plenty of time prior to the big day. Use these days wisely.
Start with small things, including out-of-season clothes, or tools and equipment you rarely use, and get these packed well in advance.
For the best results, allocate an hour or so each day to pack.
* See if you can rent a storage unit or lock up. This allows you to get things physically out of the house, and makes it easier to see what is left.
Declutter Before You Go
The last thing that you want is to get into your shiny new house and discover that you have brought rubbish with you.
Packing up and moving is a great chance to declutter anything you no longer use.
* Keep a box or bag by the door. Everytime you come across something you no longer want, it goes straight in the box. When it is full, take it straight to your car and out of sight.
Make The Most of Markers
When you are moving, markers, pens, and labels will be your new best friends, and you should use them to your full advantage.
As soon as a box is packed, make sure you write the contents, the room it is going to, and who it belongs to.
Then, when you move in, it is easy to place everything in the proper spot.
* If possible, opt for different colors for different members of the family. This will make things even easier and faster.
Don’t Forget Pets!
Moving is stressful, and it can even be tough for your pets.
Make sure you have a plan in place for them well in advance of your move, whether that is finding them kennels for the day of the move, arranging temporary accommodation, or ensuring that you have the best transport options.
Remember, you will need to take care once you have moved your pets into your new home. Speak to your vet for the best advice.
Take A Deep Breath
There will be points where you simply have to acknowledge that moving is stressful, and things will go wrong.
Be prepared to take a deep breath and go outside to yell if you need to. Remember: it will all be worth it when you are in your new home!
Final Thoughts
By staying organized, keeping calm, and acknowledging that things will go wrong, you can reduce the stress of your move and ensure that you are safe in your new home in no time.
