You have made the decision to use goal setting to achieve what you want out of life, but need a little insight into the secrets of effective goal setting.
We may all dream of what we would like to have, do and become, but until we actually set effective goals we may never achieve this.
The most effective goals are set as a positive rather than as a negative; for example, just setting the goal ‘I need to lose weight’ tends to encourage our subconscious minds to focus on our weight problem rather than actually solving it.
It is far better to phrase this as ‘By 30th April I will weight 140lbs’.
This helps your subconscious to focus on the solution and the slim person you could become.
Another example would be simply stating ‘I need to become more organized’.
A far better way of wording this goal would be to state ‘I am becoming more organized every day’.
For a goal to be effective, it has to be specific and detailed.
Just saying you want to move house is not detailed enough.
You need to describe in detail the type of house you want; how many bedrooms, what features it will have, how old it will be and what the garden will be like.
The more detailed your goal, the more motivated you will be towards achieving it and the easier it will be for you to picture having it.
Another good motivator is to get hold of some pictures relating to your dream home or whatever your goal is.
The most effective goals are those you set for yourself- it is only too easy to set goals we know that other people want us to achieve; for example your partner may want you to lose weight.
You cannot achieve goals set by other people- you must want to achieve that goal for yourself or you will not be sufficiently motivated to achieve it.
Goals need to be written down; once they are committed to paper they become real and accountable, rather than just vague thoughts and wishes in your head.
The advantage of having your goals written down is that you can get them out and read them often, which will help to keep you motivated and focused.
You will also need to set a deadline for achieving your goals; without this, your mind will not perceive any urgency towards accomplishing them and there is a danger that you will just drift.
Obviously shorter term goals will have an earlier deadline than longer term goals.
Try not to set your deadlines too far into the future as you will find it difficult to stay focused, but don’t be tempted to set unrealistic deadlines, for example to lose 50lbs in two weeks.
You would have very little hope of achieving this and would become very demoralized when you failed.
Your deadlines should be realistic and attainable but still challenging.
If you have a large goal it can be very overwhelming, so a more effective way is to break it down into smaller steps.
For example if your goal is to lose 50lbs but you currently have no idea how you are going to lose that much, make your first goal to lose 5lb in a month, then another 5lb the following month and so on.
Most people find this much more manageable than trying to achieve a larger goal all at once.
You could give yourself a small reward after you have achieved each smaller goal with a larger reward for completing the overall goal.
The more effective your goals are, the more likely you will be to achieve them and experience lasting changes in your life.
