If you have man boobs, you may be wondering isn’t gynecomastia just a lot of fatty tissue? In truth, it’s more complicated than that. There are several factors to consider when it comes to determining what your condition is.
True gynecomastia is a result of hormonal imbalances. This can be brought on by drinking too much alcohol, taking steroids, too much soy in your diet, and then there are forms that are genetic.
Gynecomastia isn’t just a lot of fatty tissue. It actually involves glands that are found in the chest called mammary glands.
In women these are the glands that produce milk after a baby is born. Normally they’re not very developed in men.
But if you’re a man that has gynecomastia, your mammary glands become overdeveloped and appear to look like female breasts.
This tissue is not just fat, it’s actually glands. These glands are denser than fat and need to be treated differently than fat tissue.
In the case of man boobs caused by being overweight, you may actually have a condition called pseudogynecomastia.
The “pseudo” at the front of the word means “false”. This is just excess fat tissue that causes the look of breasts.
Pseudo-gynecomastia is not caused by glandular overgrowth, it’s caused by actual fat cells depositing and growing in the male breast tissue.
This is often best treated by losing weight. After losing weight, depending on your body’s makeup, you may have loose skin that still gives the appearance of man boobs.
If weight loss doesn’t totally rid you of man boobs, you may want to talk with a plastic surgeon about options. Some men benefit from liposuction or from male breast reduction.
These procedures are pricey and require recovery time, but if you’re very self-conscious it might be worth it.
Before you get concerned with treatment for your man boobs, it’s important that you meet first with your doctor to determine the cause of them.
If you’re very overweight or obese, you may have developed man boobs as a result.
But if you haven’t gained weight and you’re developing male breasts, it’s important to determine the cause.
There are many factors that can cause this hormonal imbalance such as genetics, dietary causes, medications, and alcohol.
Determining what causes your gynecomastia will help you to determine if your man boobs are caused by fatty tissue or true gynecomastia that’s related to hormones and overgrowth of mammary glands.
