The development of the Windows 8 operating system is rolling along at a brisk pace, and tablets running Microsoft's mobile platform are due to hit the market sometime this fall.
Unlike Windows 7 tablets such as the HP Slate, these devices will be tuned from the word go to deliver a mobile-centric experience for users.
Even at this early stage of the game, analysts and consumers are wondering where Windows 8 mobile devices will fit into the broader tablet market.
Upcoming Windows 8 Hardware
What's nifty about the coming horde of Windows 8 hardware is the sheer diversity of models coming down the pipeline. Windows 8 is designed to be flexible and run on Intel x86 and ARM CPUs, so consumers have a lot of options.
At this point, it's already been established that Acer and Lenovo will ship a few models once Windows 8 drops in late 2012. Dell and HP will be getting in on the action as well.
So whether buyers prefer a keyboard-less laptop or a power-sipping tablet that's paper thin, there will be an option available to them that runs Microsoft's mobile-optimized operating system.
The Target Audience
Obviously, Microsoft will be gunning heavily for users who haven't yet purchased a tablet. Apple enjoys some of the strongest brand loyalty experienced by any company in the world, so persuading current Apple iPad users to ditch their devices and opt for Windows 8 might be a stretch.
However, there are plenty of Enterprise clients, office workers and casual home users that would love a Window 8 tablet.
That's where Microsoft can expect to make the most headway. If early previews are anything to go by, they may even manage to get some Apple fanatics to defect also.
Where Windows 8 Tablets Fit In
Apple's dominating lead in the tablet game has many questioning whether or not there's room for Windows 8. The answer is an emphatic “Yes”.
Though the new iPad is a magnificent device that's quite popular with many, there are still tons of people out there who don't own a tablet yet and would welcome a familiar, Windows-based device.
Even Windows 7 for tablets was actually quite good, although it suffered from inconsistent marketing. Redmond won't make that mistake again with Windows 8.
The Final Word
There's an ingrained notion among tech journalists and even the average person on the street that in order for one company to succeed, another must fail miserably.
That's simply not the case, as a wide array of options in one market can create a lot of synergy and increase sales for everyone.
The fact of the matter is that Windows 8 grabbing a decent chunk of tablet market share, as it probably will over the next year or two, isn't necessarily a bad thing for Apple.
The superb iPad can peaceably co-exist with a slew of Windows 8 hardware without the world coming to an end.
