How to Know if You are In an Abusive Teen Relationship


If you are an adult, you either have come from or have known someone who has been in an abusive relationship at some point in her life. Teen children are no different, and although abuse does happen to males too, females tend to experience the most violence in relationships.

Abuse may include:

* Verbal and Emotional Abuse

Examples include being called names, stupid, ugly, and so forth. Emotional abuse can also include isolating you from your friends and family, or stalking behaviors such as keeping tabs on where you are and who are you with.

* Physical Abuse

If you are being hit, kicked, or injured in any way physically, you are experiencing physical abuse.

Sexual Abuse

If you are being forced to do sexual things that you are not comfortable with, then this constitutes sexual abuse.

A staggering one in three teens have experienced one of the above forms of abuse from someone they are dating! This abuse tends to begin between the ages of twelve and eighteen, so it is important to learn to recognize the potential signs of an unhealthy relationship before it gets out of hand.

Here are a few warning signs to identify that you are dating someone who is not good for you:

You've noticed that…
* You are now fearful of the person you are dating
* Your friends and family are telling you that something is not right with your relationship
* You are worried that you will say the wrong thing or wear the wrong thing
* Your grades are suffering
* You don't feel like you can be yourself anymore
* You are not allowed to talk to or hang out with certain friends and family

Other signs to watch for in the person you are dating include:
* Treating you like you are property, instead of a person with feelings
* Blaming you for things that go wrong
* Asking you to give up certain things you love doing so that you can spend more time together
* Abusive and out-of-control behavior in situations that normally shouldn't cause this
* Abusive behavior towards animals
* Jealous of time you spend with others
* Manipulating you and warning you that if you break up, that he will commit suicide

In summary, abuse is much more prevalent in teen relationships than many would like to admit, however it has to be taken seriously. It is important to recognize the warning signs before the relationship gets very dangerous.
