As the world continues to change, grow, and evolve, working from home is becoming increasingly common. As the line between workplace and home blurs, maintaining balance can be tricky.
We have a few top tips to help you enjoy a healthy, productive work-life balance, and ensure that you have wellbeing and happiness in every area of your life.
Start Your Day
One of the advantages of working from home is the lack of commute. There is no need to get up an hour earlier to drive to work, share a train with grumpy commuters, or spend your hard-earned cash on travel tickets.
While these are all no doubt advantages, they can make it tricky to really “start” your day, and get into a proper routine. We have all experienced the realization that it is 2pm and we’re still working in our pajamas!
To help with this, make sure you have a proper start to your day. Get into a routine that you follow each morning. In some cases, this can involve going for a walk to mimic your commute. Not only will this help to wake you up, but it can help to create a division between work and home.
No matter how tempting it is to sleep in, always try to get up at the same time each day. This will keep you in a work mindset and enhance your productivity.
Finish On Time
One of the hardest things about working from home is knowing when to switch off. Physically having your work there with you means that it can be tempting to answer just one more email, or feel obliged to work into the night.
Have a designated finish time, and make sure that you turn off your laptop and walk away from the desk. Ideally, have a separate space where you can close the door behind you, leaving work until tomorrow.
Set Boundaries
On a similar note, it is important to set clear boundaries with your employer. For some bosses, the line between work and home can be vague, and they may feel it is acceptable to contact you out of work hours or request that you do a little extra.
While it is important to be a team player, this can result in you feeling as though you can never switch off, and can have a negative impact on your work-life balance.
If possible, have a separate phone, laptop and email for work. This helps to ensure that you can only be contacted during your contracted working hours.
Final Thoughts
Working from home has a huge number of benefits, including offering greater flexibility, allowing you more freedom and, in many cases, saving you money on your commute.
It can, however, be tricky to find that balance between your work life and your home life when they occur in the same space. Achieving this balance offers you a host of benefits, and will ensure that you excel in every area of life.
What’s your biggest issue? How do you handle it – or can you think of any additional tips you can share with others if you don’t have an issue with this in your life?
Share them with us in our Comments – or share this blog post on Twitter or Facebook or wherever you feel it could help someone you know.
