How to Cut Back on Household Expenses

There’s nothing cheap about running a household as all facets of it require us to spend money. However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t find an affordable way to run your household.

In fact, you may be surprised to find that you’re spending more money than necessary in several areas of your household expenses.

Below are a few areas where you may be able to cut back your household expenses.

Heat and Air

We all spend money heating and/or cooling our homes throughout the year, which can add up to quite a bit of money over the year.

There are ways to reduce these expenses though.

• Open Windows and Use Fans –
If it’s not miserably hot outside, then open up the windows and turn on the fans in order to stay cool.

• Close Unnecessary Vents –
Many of us have vents in our homes that don’t need to be open because we’re seldom in the room.

Close those vents and you’ll instantly save money.

• Change Filters Regularly –
Stay on top of changing your furnace filters regularly. You should be changing them every 30-60 days during heavy use.

Generally, when something goes wrong with a furnace it stems from not changing the filter.

• Open Curtains and Blinds –
During cooler months, keep your curtains and blinds open during the day.

This allows the sun’s rays to naturally heat up your home. Close curtains and blinds during hot summer months to keep cool air in.

• Use Space Heaters or Fireplace Inserts –
Space heaters and fireplace inserts are great ways to supplement your central heating, which help lower energy costs.

Landscaping

While no one enjoys spending hours outside working in their yard to improve their home’s curb appeal, it doesn’t make much sense to pay someone else to do it.

You will save a lot of money if you do your own yard work.

Home Repairs

Again, you can save additional money by fixing minor home repair problems on your own.

If you come across something you don’t know how to do, you can always find online tutorials to help.

You may even have a friend or family member who can steer you in the right direction too.

Shopping

Before you head to the store for household items, take time to go through your house and make a list of the items you are out of.

This will help you reduce the number of duplicate items you buy at the store, saving you even more money.

Groceries

Feeding the family is perhaps the largest of all the household expenses for most of us.

The good news is that there are plenty of ways to cut back on your food expenses every month!

• Eat at home.
Increase the number of days/nights you and your family eat at home and decrease the number of nights per week/month that you dine out.

This alone can save you hundreds a month, depending on how much you dine out on a regular basis.

• Cut coupons.
You don’t have to take up extreme couponing in order to save money with coupons.

Look through the local fliers every week and cut the coupons out for foods you buy on a regular basis.

Or, plan a meal around the coupons you find in the weekly flier.

• Plan meals in advance.

If you take the time to plan out the meals you are going to prepare throughout the week and make a grocery list reflecting the new meal plan, you will save money at the grocery store.

Not only will you save money, but you’ll also save time as you will know exactly what you’re going in for too!

You are a life Saver!!

I recently discovered this site and I can tell you that my life has not been the same. I now come here EVERYDAY and spend at least 1 hour.

I used to spend that time browsing online fashion and beauty magazine which just means that I spend more. Now I have replaced that habit with coming here.

In future I will think about contributing articles as well. Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!! and God bless"
