Menopause is a naturally occurring process that every woman will experience in her lifetime. The body undergoes changes that cause discomforting symptoms. These symptoms can be both physical and psychological.
Their severity varies from one woman to another. Find out more about this natural process so that you can cope with menopause effectively.
Menopause is defined simply as the stopping of production of eggs in the ovaries. The natural function of the ovaries is to release eggs every month and to produce estrogen and progesterone.
The two hormones regulate the entire menstrual cycle. The number of eggs in the ovaries is limited.
As menopause approaches, the ovaries produce smaller amounts of estrogen so fewer eggs are released. As a result, a woman has periods less regularly. Eventually, the production of estrogen is reduced to the very minimum and the release of eggs stops completely.
A woman that has not had menstrual periods for a year is in her menopause. The change usually occurs when a woman is in her late 40's or early 50's.
However, every woman is different and it is not uncommon for the process to start in the early 40's in some cases.
The stopping of the menstrual period is not the only change that occurs in the life of women that are in menopause.
It has been estimated that around 70% of females have specific symptoms associated with this naturally occurring process.
The most common symptoms that menopausal women experience are hot flashes. The sensation of warmth in the upper part of the body is regularly felt by around 75% of all females in this stage of their life.
Headaches and racing heart are other common symptoms. Vaginal dryness may also occur. Joint and muscle pain may also be present.
The psychological symptoms of menopause are often more bothersome to women. Irritability, mood swings and mild depression are actually quite common. Changes in sex drive may occur as well.
In general, it may not be easy for a woman to accept the end of her menstrual cycles, even though he hormonal changes are primarily responsible for bringing about the psychological symptoms.
There are some more serious health problems which are associated with menopause in the long term. The very low levels of estrogen increase the risk of conditions such as osteoporosis, heart disease and brain disease.
Poor bladder function and bowel function as well as poorer skin elasticity and vision problems are also associated with the loss of estrogen.
There are different types of medical therapies and natural methods to help you cope with menopause and reduce your risk of long-term health problems associated with it.
