How to Care for Frogs as Pets

Frogs are a very interesting choice for pets. Not only do they look different from traditional animals people usually have, they also do not prescribe to the typical way of caring for pets.

While many frogs have a fairly simple requirement in terms of humidity, temperature, and light, they are very sensitive to wastes and contaminants in their environment, which make them very difficult to keep. In short keeping a frog can be tricky.

What makes matters more difficult is that not all frogs are the same and if you don't fully understand the needs of the particular frog you have, the task can be laborious.

Choosing a frog
Frogs should be of a decent size. Too thin or too fat is a red flag. It is often that frogs at pet stores are already sick and you may have brought home an unhealthy frog without knowing it.

So watch out for frogs that are very easy to catch when the net goes into the tank.

Frog care is often compared to goldfish care. As easy as it may sound, frogs usually live from 4 to 15 years so long term commitment is required. There is not a no-maintenance frog.

Feeding
Frogs do not eat pellets or other commercially available pet food. They require a constant supply of live bugs. Know the feeding pattern of the particular frog you have.

Reminders
Just because you bought a small frog doesn't mean it will stay small. Some frogs are deceiving. "Pixie" frogs (from its Latin name, Pyxicephalus adspersus) may sound small but they are actually African Bullfrogs and can grow from 8 to 9 inches long and become very fat.

Regularly clean the frog's cage (aquarium). Both the soil and water should be replaced regularly to keep the aquarium clean. Frogs can be very sensitive to dirty tanks.

Some frogs are active throughout the year while some hibernate during the winter. Make sure that you know where your frog belongs before bringing it home.

It is very disappointing to see your frogs sleeping during the time you want to see them jumping around.

Poison frogs may be very tempting but they are absolutely not for beginners. They are very fragile, difficult to keep (not to mention, dangerous) and have specific health requirements.

The most recommended frog for beginners is the African dwarf frog. They are small, very active, and interesting to watch. Dwarf frogs eat black worms, blood worms, and earthworms (chopped).
