It is normal for women to want to learn how to cope with menopause symptoms naturally. Phytoestrogens may be the perfect solution.
Find out more about them and how they work. Learn about the effects, benefits and drawbacks of using them.
This will help you decide whether and how to take them.
What are phytoestrogens?
These are estrogen hormones found in plants. They are present in many plant species, usually in the seeds and fruits.
Still, not all plants contain sufficient amounts of these hormones to affect menopausal symptoms in women.
How do phytoestrogens work to relieve menopause symptoms?
Simply put, they mimic the effect of the naturally produced estrogen in the woman's body.
However, this effect is milder. The phytoestrogens do not remain in the system for long; they are flushed out with the urine.
Given that they mimic the effects of estrogen, these plant hormones work to relieve all of the common menopause symptoms including hot flashes, mood swings, headaches, joint aches and pain and dry and itchy skin.
According to women using these natural remedies, they feel greater physical and emotional wellbeing in general.
What plants contain phytoestrogens?
Many plants contain these hormones, as highlighted earlier.
However, the ones with highest concentration will produce the most effective results in treating menopause symptoms.
Plants with highest amounts of phytoestrogens include flaxseed, soy, yams, fenugreek, beans, lentils and rice.
In general, flaxseeds and the oil made from them have the highest concentration of these hormones.
Soy beans, tofu and soy milk come next.
How effective are phytoestrogens for relieving menopause symptoms?
Research on their effectiveness has not given any precise results yet.
Some studies show that they work effectively while others suggest that they do not work at all.
A recent study has suggested that phytoestrogens in soy may work to alleviate menopause symptoms only in women whose bodies can produce a specific type of estrogen.
How safe are these natural remedies?
Flaxseed oil, soy products and all the other edible plants containing phytoestrogens are generally safe for consumption.
However, it is not known whether high concentrations of these plant hormones in the body can cause undesirable side effects.
The mimicking of hormonal activity even on a small scale may produce the same side effects as hormone replacement therapy especially if the patient is at high risk of experiencing these.
Should you use phytoestrogens to relieve menopause symptoms?
You should definitely consider eating greater amounts of soy products and using flaxseed oil.
That way, the supplementation will be perfectly natural.
If you decide to take pill supplements, you should consult your doctor first.
