Five Essentials For Your Home Office

Working from home offers a number of benefits to workers. You can save on commuting costs, enjoy more open time, and have more freedom and flexibility over your hours.

One of the major issues that many workers face, however, is having a place to work - your home office is an important part of your success.

Whether you are working from home as a permanent gig, adopting a hybrid model, or simply need somewhere to be able to focus and do your work, we have put together five essentials that every home office needs.

1. Good Lighting

This is a feature that is all too often overlooked.

Good lighting should be one of your first priorities when setting up your new home office, especially if you are going to be spending a lot of time looking at screens.

Having adequate lighting helps reduce eye strain and makes it easier to type, and can even lift your mood.

You can use a number of lighting sources, including overhead lights and lamps. Just make sure that your office is not dingy and dark.

Where possible, get some natural light into the room. This helps your brain to concentrate and will lift your mood.

2. A Comfortable Chair

Sitting at a desk all day is not really the best thing for your body, and it is important to ensure you have a comfortable, supportive chair.

This should support your back and be adjustable, allowing you to be at the perfect height for your desk without straining.

If possible, splash the cash and invest in a proper office chair with lumbar support.

3. Plenty of Storage

Unlike a traditional office, you will not have a dedicated room to store files and documents. For this reason, you need to make sure that you have plenty of storage options.

Make the most of bookshelves. These can be used for storing files and folders, but can also hold boxes of items, keeping them neat and out of sight.

Plants

Evidence shows that workers who are surrounded by plants tend to be happier, more focused, and healthier. Get more oxygen into the room, and invest in some cute office plants!

Choose something low maintenance if you are short of time - there is nothing more depressing than a dead plant.

A Door

It may seem obvious, but a door is absolutely essential for your home office. You need to be able to work without interruption or disturbance, and to shut out the rest of the world.

You could use a traffic light system on the door. Green means that you can be disturbed, amber means knock first, and red means no interruptions unless it’s an emergency.

Final Thoughts

By making a few little changes to your home office, you are ensuring that your working day is as productive and enjoyable as possible.
