Getting a sunburn causes the skin to become red and inflamed. If the sunburn is severe enough, then blisters may form. Sometimes, despite how careful you are about the use of sunscreen, you can develop a sunburn.
While there are some over the counter treatments you can use, there are many essential oils you can use that can give you immediate relief from the burning pain and misery of a sunburn.
When you have a sunburn your skin is hot to the touch because it makes the blood vessels swell and that increases the blood flow to the area.
So the kind of essential oils you want to look for are the ones that not only relieve the length of time it takes the sunburn to heal but also offer cooling for your skin.
You'll find this in peppermint essential oil.
This oil, when properly diffused, is known to cool the skin that's irritated by the swollen blood vessels.
When the skin is calmed from the irritation, this lessens the amount of pain that you feel from your sunburn.
You'll need to mix this oil with a base oil. Once you do that, you can put the mixture into a spray bottle and spray it onto the sunburned areas.
Lavender oil is another essential oil that can calm irritated skin.
It comes from the flower part of the plant and has analgesic properties.
It's widely known to treat burns like sunburns and other minor burns.
Tea tree essential oil is widely known to treat a variety of skin conditions including acne and sunburns.
This oil is taken from the leaves of a plant common in Australia. The oil smells like camphor.
It should never be taken internally for any purpose because it's only safe for topical applications.
The oil can be diluted and patted gently onto the sunburned area or it can be used as a topical spray on treatment.
Another oil that offers relief from sunburn pain is Rose essential oil.
This oil comes from the flower part of the plant. Its properties help to relieve sunburn because they're anti-inflammatory as well as a relaxant.
This essential oil can also help protect the skin from infections.
Helichrysum essential oil helps to treat skin that's been inflamed by the sun and it promotes healing. The oil offers a quick cooling to the skin so you feel immediate relief.
There are some essential oil recipes that allow for a mixing of two or three different oils so that someone with a sunburn is given not only relief but anti-fungal as well as relaxant properties.
You can mix Lavender and Peppermint essential oils. You can add several drops of Helichrysum to an equal mixture of Lavender. However, peppermint essential oil should only include one to drops if you mix the oils because of its potency.
