In the days and weeks following the release of any new Apple Device, there's always a torrent of critical opinions offered up by both mainstream pundits and bloggers alike. As far as the market's concerned, the 'new iPad' is a smash hit.
Apple managed to move over 3 million in the first 3 days of sales alone. Now that some of the initial hype has subsided, we can take a more critical look at the iPad to see how critics and regular users truly feel.
Meet the Press
As far as the big name journalists are concerned, the consensus is more or less what you'd expect. That is to say, most mainstream writers give the new iPad two thumbs up.
Walt Mossberg's review of the new iPad in The Wall Street Journal is uniformly positive, which isn't that surprising. Influential technology website Computer World has gone so far as to say that the new iPad is “the 'epitome' of what a tablet should be” in a recent article.
Meanwhile, In the Blogosphere...
Depending on who you ask among hobbyist bloggers, the new iPad is either a so-so upgrade over the iPad 2 or the second coming of Jesus Christ.
Noted Apple fanatic website Apple Insider detailed the emerging perception that the new Apple iPad 2 has spotty Wi-Fi capabilities and reduced throughput in some cases. The user reviews on Tech Radar put the new iPad at 4.5 stars out of 5.0, which is about what you might expect.
Truth be told, the new iPad would probably draw sparkling reviews based on its Retina Display alone even if the unit itself periodically shocked its users.
Questions and Concerns
It's not all sunshine and smiles when it comes to the new iPad, however. Echoing the debate over the iPhone 4's antenna woes, the new iPad has come under scrutiny for its perceived heat dissipation issues.
Despite these concerns, it's still arguably the best all-around tablet for a wide swath of consumers. If the reactions of professional taste makers and real world users tell us anything, it's that no product is ever perfect.
Regardless, Apple's latest tablet effort comes awfully close.
The Final Word
Overheating issues and weak Wi-Fi reception problems aside, the new iPad still boasts 4G, more than 4 times as many display pixels as the Apple iPad 2 and beefier hardware for a more responsive experience. In other words, it's a great tablet and user reviews tend to back that up.
Though the new iPad is a solid device, the opinion of Wired that this may be the last iPad that matters is worth considering.
In any event, the latest Apple tablet looks like it's at least everything that it's cracked up to be.
