Time is money. As an entrepreneur, that cliché is even more true than you might think.
If you’re not using your time wisely, then you’re essentially making it harder for your business to survive. That’s why entrepreneurs work so hard to manage their time correctly.
Being able to create, grow, and develop a business is a process that requires a lot of networking, strategy, research, and various other activities too. Entrepreneurs are constantly jumping between calls, attending events, dealing with meetings, and more.
Learning how to manage your time properly and ensure that you don’t burn out takes some skill.
If you’re planning on making the journey into business ownership yourself, the following tips could help you to figure out how you’re going to manage your time as successfully as possible.
1. Break Your Activities Down
Using your energy productively as an entrepreneur means figuring out how you’re going to tackle different issues, one by one.
Excellent time management revolves around your ability to see an issue and break it down into small operations that are easier to understand.
When you start each day as an entrepreneur, create a list of the things that you need to do. The list shouldn’t have any big tasks on it, such as “arrange a marketing strategy”. Instead, each major task should break down into smaller sub-tasks, like “writing social media posts”, or “looking for a marketing freelancer.”
Once you have your list of things to do, prioritize what needs to be done straight away:
* What are the things that absolutely need your attention today?
* What can you move back to tomorrow?
* What can you delegate to another staff member?
2. Choose Your First Task
One of the toughest parts of prioritizing your time is figuring out where you’re going to start.
It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you first start out as an entrepreneur, because it can seem like your tasks are a massive mountain ready to swallow you whole. The worst thing you can do is allow the daunting concept of “running a business” to get the best of you.
There are two common approaches to choosing the first task of the day that can help set you up for success:
* The first option is to start with something simple. If you tend to get demotivated when you keep failing at difficult projects, starting with a simple task that you know you can accomplish will give you a boost of motivation.
* The alternative option is to skip the easy route and eat the frog. This means that you deal with the task you least want to do first. It might not sound like fun but eating the frog can help the rest of your day to seem much simpler.
3. Have Short and Long-Term Plans
Part of being a successful entrepreneur is being able to take one day at a time.
However, it’s still crucial to be able to look ahead and see the bigger picture. With that in mind, it’s worth having a long-term roadmap in mind. Look at your business plan and set some KPIs for what you’d like to accomplish.
For instance, you might decide that you want to have at least 1000 customers in the next 5 months. Figure out what kind of milestones you’ll need to reach to achieve that.
Or you might need to start your marketing campaign first and get your first 100 customers before you can reach the mark of 1000. Having a series of milestones that you can work towards will give you a direction to move in when you’re trying to reach your goals.
Defining the duties crucial to your success further down the road will help you to push towards your expected outcome and even measure your progress as you go.
4. Be Realistic
It’s easy to forget that you’re just a human being when you’re starting a new business. If you’re starting as a one-man-band, then you’re going to need to wear numerous hats to grow your company. That’s not always easy. There are days when it feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done.
However, rather than pushing yourself harder, you may need to slow down and look at how much you can reasonably do on your own.
Slow down and look at your plan. Ask yourself whether there’s anything in there that you can assign to someone else.
Hiring a professional to take on some of the work for you might mean spending money, but sometimes it’s worth it. If getting some help means you can accomplish more and grow your business faster, it might be time to look for support.
5. Learn As You Go
Successful entrepreneurs are rarely the killer business leaders that we see in the media from day one. It takes time for those professionals to learn how to run their business successfully and manage their time.
The strategies you use to handle your workload when you first start your company might not be the ones you use long-term.
Pay attention to what works for you and be willing to adapt as you go.
What’s your biggest issue? How do you handle it – or can you think of any additional tips you can share with others if you don’t have an issue with this in your life?
