5 Steps to Overcome the Fear of Success

Fear of success? Most people don’t believe they fear success, but most of them would be incorrect. Our lives rarely change because we become comfortable with our situation.

We might not like it, but it’s comfortable. We know what to expect. We might be unhappy, but we know we can deal with it.

In a nutshell, we don’t like change. We also don’t like the prospect of failing or of standing out.

You might fear success if you:

• Consistently make plans for your life, but fail to follow through on them. Whether it’s to start a business, read a book a month, or hit the gym five days a week, you just can’t seem to make it happen.

• You leave projects uncompleted. This includes at work and in your personal life.

• You’re all talk. You rarely take action.

• You struggle to make decisions.

• Your life never changes for the better.

• You self-sabotage, especially when you’re nearing success.

This probably describes most of the people you know. Does it describe you accurately?

Use these strategies to defeat your fear of success and make real changes in your life:

1. Imagine being ultra successful.

Imagine yourself being even more successful than you want to be. If your goal is to make $100,000 per year, imagine making $1 million.

If you want to lose 25 pounds, imagine getting lean enough that you can see your abs. Do this each night and morning in bed.

◦ Make the visualization as vivid as possible. Include all of your senses. When it feels uncomfortable, stick with it and just relax.

◦ In time, it will feel natural. When that happens, achieving your goal will be much easier.

2. Practice standing out.

Many of us fear success because we don’t want to stand out in any way.

Somewhere along the way, we learned or decided that it’s better to keep our head down than to be noticed.

◦ There are a variety of ways you can practice standing out in your everyday life. You can dress differently. You might even put on a pair of pink mittens and walk around the mall in the middle of the summer. Or you could wear your best clothes to the store.

◦ You could go out in public with your hair disheveled.

◦ You can do something in public that you’re either really good or really bad at, like bowling.

3. Reframe failure.

Fear of success might actually be a fear of failure. Keep in mind that failure is just an undesired result. It says nothing about you.

It simply means that you need more practice, more time, or a better approach. When you can view failure in this manner, there’s nothing to fear.

4. Focus on action over thought.

We can’t fear success if we don’t think. If you need to send 100 cold emails to find clients for your business, just sit down and get busy.

The longer you think about it, the harder it becomes. Just decide and take action.

5. Have a real vision for the future.

Enough motivation can overcome any fear. Create a possible future in your mind that is worth overcoming any obstacle.

Fear doesn’t matter if you have a very compelling future in mind.

Do you fear success? It seems counterintuitive to fear success, but it’s a common obstacle to making sustained progress in life.

Success brings attention, the unknown, and the possibility of failure.

Create a vision for the future that will pull you through any fears you might have. Learn to deal with discomfort.

Remember, you only have one life to live. Avoid allowing fear to limit your life.

Ways to Boost Creativity

No matter what line of work you are in, you can always benefit from being more creative. Whether it be coming up with more creative ways to make your life easier or more creative ways to accomplish a task faster, being more creative is a good thing.

However, how does one become more creative exactly? Well, there are some strategies that you can use to boost your overall creativity. In this article, you will see 6 of these strategies.

Exercise Your Creativity Muscle Every Day
Like with any other muscle, if you don’t use your creativity muscle, then it’s going to decay. Set aside time each day to flex your creativity muscle.

You can do this any way that you want. You can come up with new recipes for cooking, you can draw, paint, create music, write, etc. It doesn’t matter, as long as you are being creative.

Play Classical Music

Music, and more specifically classical music, helps to engage the thinking part of your brain.

Listening to music while trying to do something like solve a problem can really help you come up with a more creative solution to that problem.

Learn To Accept Failure

Learning to accept failure is probably the best way to become more creative. So many people avoid trying new ideas or concepts because they are scared of failure.

The reality is that basically everyone has more bad ideas than good ones. You have to accept that and not let it deter you.

Try New Things

Much like you need to exercise your creativity muscle, you also need to get yourself out there and expose yourself to new things. A cook can’t be more creative if they only ever eat the same thing.

An artist can’t be more creative if they don’t investigate new kinds of art. Trying new things is essential for creativity to flourish.

Be Inquisitive

Creative people are also always inquisitive. So, start getting into the habit of asking lots of questions.

Will some of them be bad questions? Sure, but you can’t let that deter you. Asking questions is an essential part of being more creative in your life.

Avoid Getting Into Habits

Finally, try to change things up as often as possible.

Even changing simple things like taking a different route somewhere or doing something different for breakfast can help to engage the right side of your brain, which is responsible for creativity.

Tips for Being Honest Without Negativity

Being honest and being kind can be tough to do simultaneously. There are times that it’s easy to be honest, while other times can require far more tact.

There are even times when it’s best to keep your opinions to yourself. It’s not always easy to know when you should speak up and when you should keep your mouth shut.

Even when you’re trying to be helpful, your honesty can backfire. Proceed with caution.

If you’ve decided to speak the truth, there are several things to keep in mind:

1. Be gentle.

There are many ways to say something. For example, you could say to your spouse, “Of course it doesn’t fit.

You’ve been eating a lot for the last three months. What did you expect would happen?”

2. Ask yourself, “Does this help the other person?”

Sometimes, the truth will be ignored even if you choose to share it. Sometimes, the truth only causes problems.

If you’re quite certain that being honest isn’t going to be beneficial, it’s best to keep your comments, opinions, and advice to yourself.

3. Start with the positive.

Before you say something that might hurt the other person’s feelings, start with a few positive statements.

Spend a moment talking about the positive before diving into the negative.

4. Have your conversation in private.

Some honest conversations are best done in private. Having the wrong conversation in front of others can create a lot of negativity.

That same conversation might not be a big deal if done one on one.

5. Focus on the behavior or situation instead of the person.

If you’re addressing someone’s behavior, keep the honesty focused on the behavior instead of making it personal.

6. Question your motivation.

Before unleashing your honesty on the other person, ask yourself what your true motivation is. Are you trying to be helpful?

Or, are you trying to even the score? Are you doing it because it will benefit the other person, or are you trying to make them feel bad?

7. Think about the likely outcome.

Be realistic and ask yourself what the likely outcome will be from your conversation. Do you expect things to go well or poorly?

Examine your true motivations for being honest in each situation. We’re often just doing it for ourselves or causing more harm than good to the other person.

You might consider yourself an “honest” person, but there are times when you should consider keeping your comments to yourself.

Each situation is unique, so it’s impossible to have a single rule that always applies. Use your common sense before offering your two cents.
