In this age of social media, reconnecting with an old friend wouldn’t seem difficult. However, it can be more challenging than you’d imagine. Work, family, and other aspects of life can overwhelm us to the point where we forget to check in on our friends.
The pandemic made us recognize the importance of having good friends. We’ve rediscovered how valuable it can be to have certain people in our lives, and we’re ready to reach out to the people we miss.
Still, attempting to initiate a conversation with an old friend can be nerve wracking - but you can do it.
Implement these simple techniques to reconnect with an old friend:
1. Send a text.
Hearing an old friend’s voice over the phone can be awkward if you haven’t interacted for some time. A text message takes some of the pressure off.
* You can say, “I just thought of you and realized it’s been so long since we had a decent chat.” That puts the ball in the other person’s court. They can then decide whether they want to get back to you or not.
2. Explain why you’ve been distant.
Are you nervous that your friend might ignore your attempts to reach out because you’ve been distant? Have you ignored the person’s attempts to reach out in the past? If so, a little awkwardness is understandable. What can you do?
* Tell your friend how life got in the way, and explain why you want to maintain the friendship. If you apologize sincerely for ignoring them, a good friend will forgive you. They are more likely to overlook your blunder and rekindle the friendship.
3. Make plans.
Reconnecting with someone requires more than sending a text. You need real interactions. Instead of saying something vague like “We should grab a coffee soon.” arrange a time and date to meet up.
* Keep the setting and experience as casual as possible. You can plan to see a movie together or grab a drink. If you suggest a brief and inexpensive meeting, your friend is more likely to accept your invitation.
4. Ask about them.
Ask what they’ve been up to since you last spoke. Mention hobbies you remember they used to love. Some may be reluctant to rekindle a relationship if they think you’re only coming back because you want something from them.
* If an old friend reaches out to you, show genuine interest in whatever they say. Ask questions and dive into details about their lives that you may have missed.
5. Get your friend reminiscing.
Nostalgia is a powerful tool, and shared memories can be a great icebreaker. If you’re struggling to find something to discuss after a long time apart, remind your friend of the special moments you shared in the past.
* Mention how something that happened recently reminded you of a specific past event. You might say, “I found a pair of roller skates in my closet last week and remembered that time we tried to become derby champions. Do you remember that?”.
Reaching out to a friend after some time apart can be daunting, but it’s not as hard as it seems. If you reach out and they ignore you – that’s the worst thing that could happen.
You can get closure on the relationship, knowing you did what you could to revive it. You can also focus on developing friendships with people who want to reconnect with you.
