Running a business is hard enough as it is, but many people make it even harder on themselves. Your personal health can have a big impact on the health of your business too, so make sure you keep it a priority.
To start with, here are 10 unhealthy personal health habits that could hurt your business. Keep these in mind and look for their warning signs.
1. Getting Angry
There's simply no way that getting angry helps you in business. When you get angry, your emotion overwhelms and blinds you. It also adds stress to what's already a stressful lifestyle. Learn to control your anger and always make decisions from a place of calm and reason.
2. Self-Doubt
It's only natural that when you start a business, you'll have your fair share of self-doubt. But too much self-doubt can keep you from taking actions that need to be taken to grow your business. When doubt raises its ugly head, remember that every business owner was inexperienced and unsure of themselves when they started out. No one is born a business owner.
3. Thinking You Know What You Don't
One of the worst things for a business owner to say is, "I know that already." For example, it's dangerous to make assumptions about your target market based on what you think they like. You need objective data about your market on which to base your decisions. If you're too set in your own opinions, you may be ignoring important new information that comes along. Keep your mind open and know what you don't know.
4. Bad Stress Management
When you start a business, it's important to look at how you deal with stress and decide whether you deal with it in a healthy way or not. There will be more stress ahead in the journey of running your own business. If you don't handle stress well, now is the time to learn some new coping strategies.
5. Working Until You Burn out
There are countless things to do and only so many hours in a day. This is why so many small business owners push themselves to work long hours, neglecting sleep and leisure activities. This leads to burnout, which can seriously damage your business. Decide on a work schedule and stick to it. Avoid working longer hours unless it's absolutely necessary.
6. Failure to Delegate
New business owners often think they have to do everything themselves. Running a business on the internet, you can do most things yourself. But this doesn't mean that you should. Instead of trying to do everything yourself, learn to ask for help when you need it and delegate tasks that drain your time or that are better left in someone else's hands.
7. Fear of Spending Money
Business owners need to consider cash flow and cut costs where they can, but you shouldn't always look for the lowest price. There are some things that you simply have to pay for. Some business owners shoot themselves in the foot by choosing low price over quality.
8. Not Listening
Listening is one of the best skills you can have as a business owner. Whether it's a colleague, customer or co-worker that's talking, don't tune them out. In order to make your business a success, you have to meet the expectations of others, and you can't do this unless you listen to them.
9. Multitasking
People think they're being productive when they multi-task but usually it's the exact opposite. When you perform multiple tasks at the same time, it's hard to give any of them the attention they require. Focus on one task at a time.
10. Fear
It's natural and healthy to feel fear and acknowledge it. But it can stop you from taking action. True courage means taking action in spite of the fear you feel. Push the fear aside and get down to business.
Running your own business is challenging but also deeply rewarding. Do your best to recognize and cut out unhealthy habits and replace them with habits that help you to succeed.
